OAE

Otoacoustic Emissions

Comprehensive OAE Hearing Assessment

OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) is a specialized, objective hearing test used to assess the function of the cochlea, particularly the outer hair cells of the inner ear. At Dr. Pareek’s Deafness Clinic and ENT Centre, OAE testing supports early identification of hearing difficulties in newborns, infants, children, and selected adults.

The test is quick, non-invasive, and does not require the patient to actively respond to sounds. A small probe is gently placed in the ear canal, where soft sounds are presented and the ear’s response is measured.

When Is an OAE Test Recommended?

An OAE hearing test may be recommended for:

  • Newborn hearing screening
  • Infant and pediatric hearing assessment
  • Suspected hearing loss
  • Monitoring cochlear function
  • Patients unable to participate reliably in conventional hearing tests
  • Follow-up evaluation of hearing concerns
  • Assessment of hearing function alongside other ENT tests

Early hearing evaluation can be particularly valuable in children because identifying hearing difficulties at an appropriate stage can support timely intervention.

How Does OAE Testing Work?

During an OAE test, a small probe containing a speaker and microphone is placed gently inside the ear canal.

The equipment:

  1. Sends controlled sounds into the ear.
  2. Stimulates the cochlea.
  3. Measures the cochlea’s response.
  4. Records the otoacoustic emissions.
  5. Provides an objective indication of cochlear function.

The procedure is generally comfortable and does not involve needles or surgical intervention. For infants, testing is often performed while the child is calm or asleep.

What Does an OAE Test Evaluate?

OAE testing primarily evaluates the function of the cochlea, particularly the outer hair cells. The results can help determine whether the inner ear is responding appropriately to sound stimulation.

OAE may be used alongside other hearing tests, including:

  • Audiometry
  • BERA
  • Tympanometry
  • Comprehensive ENT examination

Using multiple assessments when necessary can provide a more complete understanding of a patient’s hearing status.

Benefits of OAE Hearing Testing

OAE testing offers several advantages:

  • Objective hearing assessment
  • Quick and non-invasive procedure
  • No active response required
  • Useful for newborn and infant screening
  • Helps assess cochlear function
  • Supports early detection of hearing concerns
  • Can complement other hearing evaluations

An OAE result should be interpreted by a qualified ENT or hearing specialist in the context of the patient’s clinical history and other test findings.
